Module 5. Equipment: Phone, Audio, and Lighting

A $1,500 gear list is one of the fastest ways to never launch a channel. This lesson shows why the phone already in your pocket is enough to start, what actually affects viewer retention, and which upgrades can wait.
1. Why this lesson matters
Emma already has a channel and ten ideas for her first videos. Then the familiar fear arrives: “What am I supposed to film with? I do not own a camera.” Paul watches a few “my YouTube gear” videos and comes back with a $1,500 shopping list: a camera, lens, shotgun microphone, ring light, tripod, and an audio recorder.

Stop. That shopping list is one of the most reliable ways to delay a channel forever. Many beginners get stuck here: they save for a camera, compare microphones, wait for sales—and never record anything.
In this lesson, you will learn why the phone in your pocket is enough to begin, what really determines whether someone keeps watching, and what is merely expensive decoration. You will also get three ready-to-use setups: talking to camera, filming a process such as cooking or repairs, and recording your screen.
2. The main idea
Viewers rarely leave because you used the “wrong camera.” They leave when the audio is hard to understand, the picture is too dark, or the opening is boring. A reasonably recent phone is good enough to start. Your first money should go toward better audio and lighting—not a new camera.
3. Seven useful terms
Editing means trimming your footage, joining the pieces, and removing what does not belong. You do it in a dedicated program on a computer or right on your phone; we simply call it an editing program. Module 8 is devoted to it.
Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. 1080p, also written as Full HD or FHD on your phone, is standard YouTube quality and what we set at the start. 4K contains four times more detail, but the files are much larger and harder to edit; why that can wait is covered at the end of section 6.
Frames per second (fps) is how many times per second your phone captures an image. Thirty frames per second is the normal choice, and motion looks smooth.
Stabilization reduces visible camera shake. It may be built into the phone, or provided by a tripod, clamp, solid surface, or gimbal.
Lavalier microphone, often shortened to lav mic or called a lapel mic, is a small microphone clipped to your clothing near your mouth.
Screen recording captures what is happening on a phone or computer display. It is useful for software tutorials, app reviews, and demonstrations.
Raw footage is the original recording before editing. Clean source material matters: editing can improve a decent recording, but it cannot fully rescue unusable audio or extreme darkness.
4. Why your phone is enough
Open YouTube and look for several small but growing channels in your niche. You will probably find videos recorded on a phone in a kitchen, workshop, garage, or spare room. Some top channels use studio cameras, but they did not begin there—and viewers are not comparing your lens collection. They came for a useful answer.
Almost any reasonably recent phone can:
record in 1080p, and often in 4K. For ordinary YouTube videos, 1080p is more than adequate, especially because a large share of viewers watch on phones. Which one to choose is covered in section 6;
reduce moderate hand shake with built-in stabilization. If your phone struggles, place it on a stable support;
record the screen without extra software.
Phones do have two common weaknesses: low-light video and clear audio from several feet away. Both can be solved cheaply—or free—without buying a camera.
When does a dedicated camera make sense? When you publish consistently and can identify a specific visual limitation, such as close-up product work that needs better lenses or focus. New equipment should solve a proven problem. It is a reward for consistency, not an admission ticket.

5. Camera settings before your first shoot
“What settings should I use?” is one of the most common beginner questions. The good news: there are only three settings to change, once, for good. The bad news: two of them ship wrong from the factory, and you will not notice until you sit down to edit and find your storage full and your colours washed out. This takes about five minutes.
I will show both phones. On iPhone the path is identical for everyone, so you get exact steps. On Android every manufacturer names things differently, so you get what to look for and what it looks like. The settings themselves are the same, they just live somewhere else.
About the arrow: “Settings → Camera” means “open Settings, then tap Camera”. Nothing to type, just tap in order.
Set once and forget
Recording quality: 1080p at 30 frames per second. That is the right answer for nine out of your first ten videos. YouTube accepts it without complaint, the files stay small, and any computer — or even your phone — can edit them later. Set it and move on.
If those labels mean nothing to you: video is a fast sequence of still images. “30 frames per second” means the phone captures thirty of them every second, which makes motion look smooth. 1080p is the size of each of those images.
Where to set it:
iPhone. Settings → Camera → Record Video → “1080p HD at 30 fps”. Leave the “Enhanced Stabilization” switch below it alone — it is on by default, and that is correct.
Android. This lives inside the camera app rather than in phone settings. Open Camera. Along the bottom you will see words like Photo, Video, Portrait — swipe until you land on Video. A gear icon or three dots appears at the top. Tap it, find “Video resolution” or “Video size”, and pick the option containing 1080 or FHD with 30 next to it. You cannot break anything by tapping around here. If there is no such option at all, no problem: film with the factory settings and come back to this later.
Turn off “HDR Video”, or your footage will look grey. Nine beginners out of ten leave this on, then spend a week wondering why a video looks fine on the phone and washed out on the computer. The reason is simple: the phone records colour its own way, editing programs do not understand it, and the picture comes out pale. So we turn it off.
On iPhone the switch is on the same screen: Settings → Camera → Record Video → HDR Video (on some models it is labelled just “HDR”) — turn it off. If there is no such setting at all, your model does not record that way, so skip it; everything is fine.
On Android not every phone has this. If yours does, it will be called “HDR10+” or “High dynamic range” — the same thing under a longer name. Found it? Turn it off. Did not find it? Then your phone does not have it, which is one less thing to worry about.

Turn the grid on. These are thin lines dividing the screen into nine parts. They do not appear in your recording, but they help you keep the horizon level instead of tilted. On iPhone: Settings → Camera → Grid. On Android it is in the camera app settings, usually under that exact name.
That is it. Your settings are done and you will not need to go back for the next few videos.
Try it right now. Open the camera, point the phone at yourself, tap the screen where your face appears, and record twenty seconds: your name and what your channel will be about. Watch it back. That is your first piece of raw footage — the file a finished video gets built from — and it is already set up correctly.
Thirty seconds before every recording
Three habits that take half a minute and save more takes than any equipment. The easiest way to remember them: glass — face — aeroplane.
Glass. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth or the hem of your shirt. A smudged lens produces a hazy, foggy picture, and it is a very common reason behind “my phone films badly”.
Face. Point the phone at yourself so your face appears on screen, then tap it with your finger, right on the glass: a small frame appears around your face, which means the phone understood. Why: your phone decides on its own what to focus on and how bright to make things, and it often decides badly — locking onto a bright window while your face goes dark. Tapping tells it to use you as the reference.
If the picture still drifts while you record — brighter, then darker — press and hold on your face for a couple of seconds on iPhone until a yellow “AE/AF LOCK” badge appears at the top. That means focus and brightness are locked and will not jump. On many Android phones a long press does the same, and a padlock icon appears.

Aeroplane. Turn on aeroplane mode: your phone stops receiving calls, as if you were on a flight. One incoming call in the middle of a take, and ten minutes of talking are gone.
How to open it:
Android — swipe down from the top edge of the screen;
iPhone without a home button — swipe down from the top right corner;
iPhone with a round home button — swipe up from the bottom edge.
A panel of icons opens and the aeroplane is among the first ones. Tap it and it lights up. Turn Wi-Fi off as well, or a call will still come through from WhatsApp, Telegram, or Messenger. After filming, tap the aeroplane again to turn it off, otherwise nobody will be able to reach you.
Separately, before you start: check how much free storage you have. An hour of footage takes roughly four gigabytes — about the same as a thousand phone photos. Your phone will tell you: on iPhone, Settings → General → iPhone Storage; on Android, Settings → Storage. You will see something like “12 GB available” — that is the number you need, and GB means gigabytes. Less than four free and an hour of video will not fit: delete old holiday videos or downloaded films.
What to leave alone — and why videos recommend it
Cinematic mode blurs the background beautifully — and misses your face at the exact moment you lean toward the table. Manual professional controls give you command of brightness and focus that you have no time to use on your first videos. Paid “proper filmmaking” apps add a dozen new ways to get it wrong. Free “best camera settings” videos recommend all of this because complexity is entertaining to watch. What you need right now is not entertaining — it is a finished video.
The stock camera app with the three settings from this section is everything your first videos need.
One caveat for iPhone owners: if an editing program later refuses to open your files, or shows a black screen with sound instead of a picture, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. Your phone will start recording in a format every program understands. Files become noticeably heavier, sometimes almost double, and storage runs out faster — but they will open anywhere.
What if you want to film in 4K
This part is not for today. Today you set 1080p and stop thinking about it. Come back when your first videos are out and you are comfortable editing, after module 8. For now it is enough to know that 4K exists and that you lose nothing by filming in 1080p.
4K is an image four times larger and more detailed. It genuinely is sharper, YouTube accepts it without any trouble, and on a large television the difference is visible. So wanting to film in 4K is not vanity.
But you pay for that quality — not in money, but in time after the shoot:
Files are two to three times heavier. An hour in 1080p is roughly 4 gigabytes; an hour in 4K is about 10. Phone storage fills up after a couple of sessions. Emma had 4K set from the factory, and a single hour of filming dinner ate almost all of her free space. Paul had the opposite problem: he deliberately set the maximum — “might as well have the best” — and a week later could not finish filming a walk because he ran out of storage right there on the riverbank.
Your computer starts to choke. The picture stutters in your editing program, sound drifts out of sync with the image, the program freezes or closes by itself. This is not a fault and not a “bad computer” — files that heavy slow down almost everyone, while 1080p edits fine even on an ageing laptop.
Producing the finished file takes far longer. When the edit is done, the program glues all the pieces into a single file; that button is usually labelled Export. On a slower computer a ten-minute video in 1080p might take about ten minutes, while in 4K you can sit there for an hour or more.
How to decide without learning how computers work: set 4K, film five minutes, and try cutting it in an editing program — the one you will install in module 8. Runs smoothly? Keep filming in 4K. Stutters, lags, or crashes? Go calmly back to 1080p; that is not a defeat, because the overwhelming majority of viewers watch on a phone, where the difference between 1080p and 4K is barely visible. And if you edit on your phone, stay on 1080p without a second thought.
There is a third outcome people often confuse with the first two: the files do not open at all, and the program shows a black screen with sound or a message that the file is unsupported. That is not about 4K, it is about the recording format — lowering the quality will not help, but “Most Compatible” from the previous block will.

Where 4K genuinely pays off is filming a process: cooking, crafts, repairs. Not for the sharpness, but for this: you film a wide shot, then enlarge the hands while editing and get a close-up you never filmed. This is called cropping. It only works if you produce the finished video in 1080p — then the cropped piece stays sharp. If you filmed in 1080p, the trick does not work and the picture falls apart; simply film the close-up separately.
As for “4K at 60 fps”, do not set it at the start: an hour in that mode weighs more than twenty gigabytes — over six times an hour of 1080p, meaning a full phone after two sessions — and editing will stall on almost any computer. Sixty frames per second is useful in itself for fast motion — outdoors, children, sport — but pair it with 1080p rather than 4K. One more thing: if you switched to the “Most Compatible” format, the “4K at 60 fps” option disappears from the list entirely, because it is only recorded in the standard format.
6. Audio matters more than video quality
Viewers may forgive slightly soft phone footage. They are much less patient with muffled speech, echo, or constant background noise. Good audio depends on three things: distance, the room, and noise.
Keep the microphone close to your mouth. A phone about three feet (one metre) away can sound acceptable. From across the room, your voice will usually sound hollow and distant.
The room matters as much as the microphone. Bare walls and hard floors create echo. Curtains, rugs, couches, bedding, and a closet full of clothes absorb reflections. Recording in a furnished room is the cheapest audio upgrade available.
Background noise is louder in a recording than it seems in the moment. Listen for the refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioner, road noise, fans, or power tools. Turn off what you safely can, close the window—and remember to turn the refrigerator back on afterward. If the noise cannot be controlled, record the explanation later as a voice-over.
The first sensible purchase for many channels is a lavalier microphone. It clips to a collar or shirt and stays close to your mouth even when you step away from the phone. That is especially useful for cooking, crafts, repairs, and demonstrations where your hands are busy.
Check the port before buying. A wired 3.5 mm lav mic is the least expensive option for devices with a compatible microphone input. USB-C models work with most current Android phones and iPhone 15, 16, 17 and newer models. Lightning models are for iPhone 14 and earlier devices that still use a Lightning port. Wireless lav systems are also available, but the very cheapest ones can be unreliable.

Before every important recording, make a 20-second test and listen through headphones. Confirm that the phone is using the external microphone—not its built-in mic—and fix any echo or noise before filming the full video.
7. Lighting: start with a window
An expensive camera in a dark room can look worse than a phone beside a window. Lighting is the second priority after audio, and your best starter light is free.
Use a window as your main light. Face the window, or turn slightly toward it, with the phone between you and the window. The light will be soft and even. Do not put the bright window directly behind you or your face may become a dark silhouette.
Record during daylight when possible. Moving the shoot to a weekend morning is often easier than building a full evening lighting setup.
If evenings are your normal filming time, build a repeatable evening setup. Place a bright lamp slightly to one side and above eye level. Avoid lighting only from below or directly overhead, which creates harsh shadows.
A ring light is useful but optional. It gives even facial light for talking-head videos, but a lav mic usually produces a bigger improvement when the budget is limited.
For cooking, repairs, or crafts, light the work area—not the back of your head and not the camera lens. Position the phone so the window or lamp illuminates the countertop, tools, hands, or object you are demonstrating.
If the room is dark even during the day, consider a softbox: a lamp inside a fabric diffuser that produces broad, soft light. One softbox placed slightly above eye level and off to one side is enough for a basic talking-head setup. For process videos at night, a second light can soften shadows or separate the background.
Avoid mixing strongly yellow ceiling bulbs with cool white video lights; the colours may look dirty and inconsistent. If you do not yet own a softbox, bouncing a bright lamp off a white wall can soften it safely. Do not drape fabric directly over a hot bulb or fixture.

8. Three filming setups

Setup 1: Talking to camera
Useful for introductions, opinions, explanations, and reviews. You need a phone, a stable support, window light, and ideally a lav mic—or a quiet room with the phone close enough to record your voice clearly.
Hold the phone horizontally for standard videos and vertically for Shorts.
Place the camera at eye level. A stack of books can work as well as a basic tripod.
Face the window. Leave some space behind you instead of sitting directly against a bare wall; the image gains depth and the wall creates less echo.
Record a 20-second test. Check the sound, framing, focus, and whether the top of your head is accidentally cut off.
Setup 2: Filming a process—cooking, repairs, or crafts
You need a phone, a support above or beside the work area, and light directed at the task.
Combine one wider shot that shows the workspace with close-ups of the hands and important details. One phone is enough: record the wide action, then repeat the key moment as a close-up.
Aim the light at the countertop, tool, or object—not into the lens.
If you speak while working, use a lav mic. If the environment is noisy, record the explanation afterward and add it as a voice-over. Most editors treat it as a normal second audio track. Editing is covered in Module 8.
Your face does not have to appear. Many successful channels show only hands, tools, ingredients, products, or a computer screen.
Setup 3: Screen recording
You need only a phone or computer.
On Android, open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top and select Screen Record. You may need to add the tile first. On iPhone, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner and press the Screen Recording control; press and hold it to enable the microphone. On Windows, use the built-in recording tools or Xbox Game Bar (Win+G). On macOS, use Shift+Command+5. OBS Studio is a free option for more advanced recording.
The microphone is often off by default. Turn it on and test for 20 seconds before recording a long tutorial.
Record your voice at the same time in a quiet room—or record a cleaner voice-over afterward.
Hide private notifications, extra browser tabs, documents, and email before you start.

9. Filming outdoors: wind, sunlight, and camera shake
Many creators record at least part of their content outdoors: vloggers, anglers, builders, gardeners, tradespeople, and travel creators. Outdoor locations provide free light and a lively background, but they add wind, direct sun, camera movement, cold, dust, and moisture.
Wind is the biggest outdoor audio problem. Even a light breeze can create loud low-frequency rumble. Put a small furry windscreen over the lav mic and tuck it partly behind a collar or jacket flap without rubbing the fabric against it. Stand with your back to the wind so your body shields the microphone. If the conditions are too noisy, record the explanation indoors as a voice-over.
Treat the sky like a very large window. Keep the main light in front of you or off to one side. Direct midday sun causes hard shadows and squinting, while bright sky behind you can turn your face into a silhouette. Overcast weather, early morning, late afternoon, or open shade facing the sky usually produces the easiest light. Tap your face on the phone screen so exposure and focus are set for you rather than the bright background.
Walking footage often looks shakier than it felt while recording. Built-in stabilization helps with slow movement, but it cannot completely remove footsteps, running, or abrupt turns.
The easiest fix is to keep the phone still. Put it on a tripod, clamp, fence post, backpack, rock, or other safe support and move within the frame.
Film a sequence of short stationary shots. Record one moment, move the phone, and record the next. Editing stable clips together usually looks cleaner than one long shaky walk.
Use a gimbal only when moving shots are essential to the format. A phone gimbal uses motors to smooth walking footage, but it is not a first purchase for most channels.
Cold and battery life: batteries drain much faster in low temperatures. Carry a power bank and keep the phone in an inside pocket between takes. If condensation forms after moving from cold air into a warm room, let the phone dry before charging it.
Dust and moisture: clean the camera lens with a soft cloth before recording. Sawdust, fingerprints, spray, and rain can turn a sharp image into a hazy one. Protect the phone appropriately around water and bad weather.

10. What not to buy yet
A camera that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars. You do not need one until you can name a specific limitation of your phone—and that requires regular filming first.
A shotgun mic or large studio microphone. For most beginner setups, a $15–$30 lav mic solves the more important problem: keeping the microphone close to the speaker.
A complete studio-lighting kit. A window and one lamp are enough to start. If your room is genuinely dark, one or two inexpensive softboxes are more practical than a room full of stands and umbrellas.
A green screen. Ordinary videos rarely need one, and a poorly lit green screen looks worse than a normal room.
An expensive tripod. A basic phone holder, clamp, or stack of books is fine.
“Creator starter bundles” from marketplaces. They often combine a weak light, unstable tripod, and questionable microphone at a price that would buy one or two dependable pieces separately.
If you have a budget and want a sensible order, use this: lav mic → simple lamp, ring light, or softbox if needed → phone holder or tripod → dedicated camera only after the channel is consistent and the phone is clearly limiting you.

11. Common beginner mistakes
Waiting for equipment instead of filming. “I will start when I buy a camera” is how a channel never starts. Recording the first videos on a phone is normal.
Putting a bright window behind the subject. This creates the classic dark silhouette against an overexposed background.
Skipping the audio test. Echo, air conditioning, refrigerator hum, or the wrong microphone input may be discovered only after an hour-long recording.
Using the wrong orientation. Standard YouTube videos are usually horizontal; Shorts are vertical. Cropping one format into the other can remove most of the useful frame.
Chasing 4K before your first video is out. Your phone fills up and your computer chokes. Film your first videos in 1080p — the reasoning is at the end of section 6.
Walking while filming handheld without a reason. Shaky footage can make viewers uncomfortable. Keep the phone still, or use a gimbal when moving shots are central to the format.
Forgetting the wind. A small furry windscreen can save an outdoor recording.
Buying everything before the first ten videos. Gear purchased before you understand the format often ends up unused.
12. Practical exercise
